Who knows who seems to be a game that still is played in this day and age. It used to be that if you knew "so-and-so" he could get you into the night club run by his uncles cousin!
Well, connections still do occur but it's done slightly different. Take a look at www.craigslist.org and you will find that there is a "community" section. Watch the ads there and the events to find network meetings. Also, on the right hand lower side of the index page you will find a section "Gigs" - be sure to keep a watch there for jobs.
Over at www.backpage.com you will find a great section for musicians - watch the ads there to get connected to your local community.
